Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine which treats the person as a unique individual. A homeopath will not look at physical, emotional, mental or spiritual symptoms separately, but regard them as intimately connected, since all are aspects of the whole person. A human being is an integrated system maintained by an energy flow. Ill health stems from a blockage in this energy flow, which will affect all facets of a person.
Homeopathy has a great deal to offer. With this approach to illness, a Homeopath can often help patients with diseases generally considered without cure by conventional medicine. It can be used in the treatment of long standing disease and also in recent problems, in children and adults.
History of Homeopathy
It was Samuel Hahnemann though, a well respected physician, scholar and teacher, born in Saxony, Germany, who developed Homeopathy into an applicable system of medicine. Having withstood the test of 200 years of practice, there now are homeopathic hospitals, clinics and homeopathic medical schools in many countries all over the world.
"The physician's highest calling, his only calling, is to make sick people healthy - to heal, as it is termed" - Samuel Hahnemann.
He started to experiment with other drugs. He found that every drug produces on the healthy body, a similar condition which it cures in the sick.
Principles of Homeopathy
After 15 years of observation and experiment, Hahnemann confirmed the law that "likes be cured by likes" or in Latin "similia similibus curentur". This was not a new discovery- the ancient Indian physicians knew of it and so did Hippocrates over 2000 years ago. Hippocrates realised that "through the like, disease is produced and through the application of the like, it is cured". After a lifetimes work, Hahnemann was the first to firmly establish and develop it into a system of medicine.
The main principle of homeopathy, 'Like cures Likes', demands from the Homeopath to use a substance which helps to support, rather than suppress the symptoms of the organism.
Hahnemann coined the word "Homeopathy" which derives from two Greek words, Homoiou (like or similar), and pathos (suffering). This means "similar suffering" and neatly sums up the fundamental law underlying Homeopathy.
What does a homeopathic consultation involve?
You will be asked about your past and present health, life experiences, patterns of health in your family and your personal characteristics. This will include looking at the physical, mental and emotional characteristics which make up you as a unique individual. Consultations are totally confidential.
Physical symptoms, personality, life history, inheritance, all can yield important information to the Homeopath in his attempt to select the appropriate remedy for the individual person.
What can I expect from my homeopathic treatment?
You may be given a single dose, or repeated doses of a homeopathic remedy. Where illness has been developed over a long period of time, several treatments may be necessary over a period of months. Whereas in acute (short term) conditions, results may be gained very quickly.
Recovery takes place in different ways depending on the nature and history of your condition. Generally you will notice an increase in energy and wellbeing during your recovery.
It is basic to Homeopathy that when there is improvement the remedy should be stopped - if remedies are needlessly continued they can over stimulate and symptoms will sometimes reappear. Also in chronic complaints the symptom will sometimes need to get worse before it gets better (a healing crises) e.g. a person with a chronic sinus problem may experience profuse nasal discharge for a short time.
The human being is an integrated system maintained by an energy flow. Disease is a form of disorder or blockage in this energy flow which affects all facets of the person. Homeopathic remedies work by gently stimulating this healing energy, thus enhancing the human organisms natural, inborn drive towards balance - to enable alleviation of disease symptoms.
Homeopathic medicines are prepared by a method of serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking) called 'potentization' whereby the energy latent in the medicine is liberated and increased. The process of dilution and succussion imprints the characteristic energy pattern, or blueprint, of the original substance into the remedy. There is abundant proof, over the last 200 years, that the remedies do work.
